NANOTECHNOLOGY IN COSMETICS: HEALTH OR JUST BEAUTY?
Author: Dr. Marina Goumenou

Nanotechnology is the science, engineering, and technology of materials with size within 1 and 100 nanometres. Nanomaterials, due to their size, have different physicochemical and biological behaviour from traditional materials, such as enhanced delivery with intradermal penetration and better product appearance. Nanomaterials are widely used in cosmetics and cosmeceuticals, in products for anti-wrinkling, dehydrated and inelastic skin associated with aging, dispersed hyperpigmentation, sunscreens, nail-care products, lip-care products, and more. However, further than their efficacy, their possible health adverse effects after long-term used need to be studied appropriately.
Several factors are compromising the appropriateness of safety assessment of nanomaterials in cosmetics. In EU the use of animals in the toxicological testing of cosmetics is forbitten though all necessary alternatives are not yet in place. This gap could be theoretically covered from the fact that several nanomaterials are also used in the chemicals’ industry and toxicological studies are available from the animal-testing permissible REACH regulation. However, the results of these studies could be considered questionable, as they are performed using testing protocols not made for nanomaterials. Another compromising factor is that the current regulations pass the responsibility of safety assessment in the cosmetics’ producing companies. As a result, the respective safety data are not publicly available, to support farther the scientific understanding of nanomaterials health effects. Further collaboration between industry, safety authorities, and researchers is necessary to increase our knowledge on nanomaterials safety and to provide safe products to the consumers.
