Introduction: Acne and hirsutism are present in about 50% of menopausal women. These skin conditions are the result of hyperandrogenism. The diagnosis of underlying cause is challenging.
Material and method: The development of hirsutism (defined as the presence of excessive terminal hair in androgen-dependent areas), alopecia, or acne should not be considered normal in all menopausal women. The menopausal ovary remains hormonally active, secreting significant amounts of androgens and relatively fewer estrogens years after menopause. This imbalance between testosterone and oestrogens may result in hirsutism, acne and female pattern hair loss. Other possible causes are: adrenal tumors, Cushing syndrome, acromegaly, ovarian tumors. The identification of the exact cause of androgen excess in menopausal women may not always be evident, necessitating employment of a combination of clinical skills accompanied with appropriate laboratory indices and\/or imaging techniques. The treatment is complex endocrinologic and dermato-cosmetologic in order to block the secretion and the action of androgens and in the same time to solve the skin manifestations.
Conclusions: Hirsutism and acne in menopausal women needs a complex team for diagnosis and treatment and the collaboration between endocrinologist and dermatologist is mandatory in order to achieve this objective.<\/p>\n

Introducere: Aproape 50% din femeile aflate la menopauz\u0103 prezint\u0103 hirsutism \u0219i acnee. Aceste manifest\u0103ri tegumentare sunt rezultatul unei secre\u021bii crescute ale hormonilor androgeni. Diagnosticarea cauzei care a determinat acest hiperandrogenism este dificil\u0103.
Material \u0219i metod\u0103: Apari\u021bia hirsutismului (definit ca o prezen\u021ba excesiv\u0103 a p\u0103rului de tip terminal \u00een zonele androgen-dependente), alopeciei \u0219i acneei nu trebuie tratat cu superficialitate la femeile aflate la menopauz\u0103. Ovarul la menopauz\u0103 r\u0103m\u00e2ne activ hormonal, secret\u00e2nd androgeni \u0219i cantit\u0103\u021bi mici de estrogeni. Acest dezechilibru \u00eentre testosteron \u0219i estrogeni se poate materializa \u00een hirsutism, acnee \u0219i alopecie fronto-parietal\u0103. Alte posibile cauze sunt tumorile suprarenale, tumorile ovariene, sindromul Cushing, acromegalia. Identificarea cauzei care a determinat excesul de androgeni poate fi dificil\u0103 necesit\u00e2nd o expertiz\u0103 clinic\u0103 coroborat\u0103 cu mijloace de diagnostic biologice\/hormonale \u0219i imagistice. Tratamentul este complex, endocrinologic \u0219i dermatologic, \u00een vederea bloc\u0103rii secre\u021biei \u0219i ac\u021biunii androgenilor la nivelul dermului \u0219i, \u00een acel\u0219i timp, trebuie s\u0103 se adreseze \u0219i manifest\u0103rilor tegumentare.
Concluzii: Hirsutismul \u0219i acneea, la femeia aflat\u0103 la menopauz\u0103, necesit\u0103 o echip\u0103 complex\u0103 \u00een vederea diagnosticului \u0219i tratamentului corect. Colaborarea dintre endocrinolog \u0219i dermatolog este obligatorie pentru atingerea acestui obiectiv.<\/p>\n
Hirsutisme and acne in menopausal woman. How to diagnose and how to treat?

Introduction: Acne and hirsutism are present in about 50% of menopausal women. These skin conditions are the result of hyperandrogenism. The diagnosis of underlying cause is challenging.
Material and method: The development of hirsutism (defined as the presence of excessive terminal hair in androgen-dependent areas), alopecia, or acne should not be considered normal in all menopausal women. The menopausal ovary remains hormonally active, secreting significant amounts of androgens and relatively fewer estrogens years after menopause. This imbalance between testosterone and oestrogens may result in hirsutism, acne and female pattern hair loss. Other possible causes are: adrenal tumors, Cushing syndrome, acromegaly, ovarian tumors. The identification of the exact cause of androgen excess in menopausal women may not always be evident, necessitating employment of a combination of clinical skills accompanied with appropriate laboratory indices and\/or imaging techniques. The treatment is complex endocrinologic and dermato-cosmetologic in order to block the secretion and the action of androgens and in the same time to solve the skin manifestations.
Conclusions: Hirsutism and acne in menopausal women needs a complex team for diagnosis and treatment and the collaboration between endocrinologist and dermatologist is mandatory in order to achieve this objective.<\/p>\n

Material \u0219i metod\u0103: Apari\u021bia hirsutismului (definit ca o prezen\u021ba excesiv\u0103 a p\u0103rului de tip terminal \u00een zonele androgen-dependente), alopeciei \u0219i acneei nu trebuie tratat cu superficialitate la femeile aflate la menopauz\u0103. Ovarul la menopauz\u0103 r\u0103m\u00e2ne activ hormonal, secret\u00e2nd androgeni \u0219i cantit\u0103\u021bi mici de estrogeni. Acest dezechilibru \u00eentre testosteron \u0219i estrogeni se poate materializa \u00een hirsutism, acnee \u0219i alopecie fronto-parietal\u0103. Alte posibile cauze sunt tumorile suprarenale, tumorile ovariene, sindromul Cushing, acromegalia. Identificarea cauzei care a determinat excesul de androgeni poate fi dificil\u0103 necesit\u00e2nd o expertiz\u0103 clinic\u0103 coroborat\u0103 cu mijloace de diagnostic biologice\/hormonale \u0219i imagistice. Tratamentul este complex, endocrinologic \u0219i dermatologic, \u00een vederea bloc\u0103rii secre\u021biei \u0219i ac\u021biunii androgenilor la nivelul dermului \u0219i, \u00een acel\u0219i timp, trebuie s\u0103 se adreseze \u0219i manifest\u0103rilor tegumentare.
Concluzii: Hirsutismul \u0219i acneea, la femeia aflat\u0103 la menopauz\u0103, necesit\u0103 o echip\u0103 complex\u0103 \u00een vederea diagnosticului \u0219i tratamentului corect. Colaborarea dintre endocrinolog \u0219i dermatolog este obligatorie pentru atingerea acestui obiectiv.<\/p>\n

Material and method: The development of hirsutism (defined as the presence of excessive terminal hair in androgen-dependent areas), alopecia, or acne should not be considered normal in all menopausal women. The menopausal ovary remains hormonally active, secreting significant amounts of androgens and relatively fewer estrogens years after menopause. This imbalance between testosterone and oestrogens may result in hirsutism, acne and female pattern hair loss. Other possible causes are: adrenal tumors, Cushing syndrome, acromegaly, ovarian tumors. The identification of the exact cause of androgen excess in menopausal women may not always be evident, necessitating employment of a combination of clinical skills accompanied with appropriate laboratory indices and\/or imaging techniques. The treatment is complex endocrinologic and dermato-cosmetologic in order to block the secretion and the action of androgens and in the same time to solve the skin manifestations.
Conclusions: Hirsutism and acne in menopausal women needs a complex team for diagnosis and treatment and the collaboration between endocrinologist and dermatologist is mandatory in order to achieve this objective.<\/p>\n<\/span><\/p>\n
