The most common endocrine disease associated with hyperandrogenism is PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) up to 10%. Other conditions like congenital adrenal hyperplasia, adrenocortical carcinoma, Cushing’s disease, ovarian hyperthecosis, virilizing ovarian tumors or severe insulin resistance syndromes are posing diagnosis challenge for the physician.
Adult female acne is a possible clinical expression of increased androgen production inducing in turn sebum alterations explaining the pathogenesis of adult acne.
Management of symptoms include the use of antiandrogens such as cyproterone acetate, spironolactone, and flutamide or hormonal contraceptives.
