Author: Simona Georgescu<\/span><\/p>\nDiabetes mellitus (DM) is a common disease, responsible for increased morbidity and mortality worldwide. Diabetic foot ulcers are some of the most frequent complications in patients suffering from DM, occurring in approximately 15-25% of diabetics. The disease is multifactorial and factors like poor glycemic control, peripheral neuropathy, trauma, improper foot care, inadequate footwear and peripheral vascular disease play a central role in its development. Since diabetic foot is the most frequent condition associated with foot amputation, it is considered an important healthcare issue. However, several other cutaneous disorders can affect the foot of the diabetic, including bacterial infections, fungal and yeast infections, necrobiosis lipoidica, diabetic dermopathy and granuloma annulare, among others. Due to the complexity of the disease, a multidisciplinary team consisting in dermatologists, diabetes specialists, internal medicine specialists, podiatrists and vascular surgeons is required for the best management of the patient.
\nDiabetic leg ulcers are typically located in areas of high pressure load, over bony prominences of feet, such as the toe, the sole or over the metacarpophalangeal joints. Ulcers are of circular shape and they are surrounded by a ring of callus. Deformities of the foot such as claw toe or hallux valgus can sometimes be observed and dry and fissured skin with hyperkeratosis and lack of hair are signs of polyneuropathy.
\nThe management of diabetic foot includes the modification of predisposing factors, debridement and wound care. Various other modern treatments are now being investigated. However, prevention is of the utmost importance.
\nIn conclusion, cutaneous changes in diabetic foot are serious conditions associated with high risk of foot amputation which should be managed by multidisciplinary teams of specialists. Despite advances in treatment options, prevention remains the most important intervention.<\/p>\n

Author: Simona Georgescu<\/span><\/p>\nDiabetes mellitus (DM) is a common disease, responsible for increased morbidity and mortality worldwide. Diabetic foot ulcers are some of the most frequent complications in patients suffering from DM, occurring in approximately 15-25% of diabetics. The disease is multifactorial and factors like poor glycemic control, peripheral neuropathy, trauma, improper foot care, inadequate footwear and peripheral vascular disease play a central role in its development. Since diabetic foot is the most frequent condition associated with foot amputation, it is considered an important healthcare issue. However, several other cutaneous disorders can affect the foot of the diabetic, including bacterial infections, fungal and yeast infections, necrobiosis lipoidica, diabetic dermopathy and granuloma annulare, among others. Due to the complexity of the disease, a multidisciplinary team consisting in dermatologists, diabetes specialists, internal medicine specialists, podiatrists and vascular surgeons is required for the best management of the patient.
\nDiabetic leg ulcers are typically located in areas of high pressure load, over bony prominences of feet, such as the toe, the sole or over the metacarpophalangeal joints. Ulcers are of circular shape and they are surrounded by a ring of callus. Deformities of the foot such as claw toe or hallux valgus can sometimes be observed and dry and fissured skin with hyperkeratosis and lack of hair are signs of polyneuropathy.
\nThe management of diabetic foot includes the modification of predisposing factors, debridement and wound care. Various other modern treatments are now being investigated. However, prevention is of the utmost importance.
\nIn conclusion, cutaneous changes in diabetic foot are serious conditions associated with high risk of foot amputation which should be managed by multidisciplinary teams of specialists. Despite advances in treatment options, prevention remains the most important intervention.<\/p>\n
