Human Trafficking and the Sexually Transmitted Infections<\/span>

Romania is one of the most affected European countries by human trafficking as hundreds or maybe thousands of women and children are forced into prostitution. Because of its geographical position at the border of the European Union, it serves as the origin, transit or destination zone for trafficked human beings. Young woman from rural or marginalised areas, generally with poor educational status and no knowledge of sexual hygiene or concerning sexually transmitted infections (STIs), are most likely to fall victims to traffickers acting under covert or false identities \u201coffering\u201d them well-payed jobs or a loving relationship. The aim of our paper is to analyse the actual status oh human trafficking in Romania and its health impact in terms of STIs. According to the Romanian Agency for Human Trafficking, in 2018 there were identified 497 victims, among them 363 females (73%). Most individuals were exploited sexually (335 cases \u2013 67.4%) in Romania, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and Spain and minors represented 42.7% of cases (212 persons). According to prospective studies and meta-analyses worldwide, most victims report multiple physical health issues including fatigue, headaches, sexual and reproductive health problems, back pain and weight loss. Victims report great difficulties regarding condom use (condom failure 22.4% or non-use 8.2%) and have a high incidence of STIs like HIV (from 5.4% in Indonesia to 38% in India and 60% in South Africa), HPV (45% victims worldwide), drug resistant gonorrhoea and syphilis. Coinfection with hepatitis B virus and tuberculosis are also frequent. In conclusion, as a result or prolonged sexual abuse, victims of human trafficking are usually affected by STIs and contribute to global dispersion and mutation of HIV and HPV and to the increasing drug resistance of gonorrhoea and syphilis. Given the associated health issues, victims of human trafficking should be recognized as an official diagnosis in the International Classification of Diseases.<\/p>\n
