SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and the eye \u2013 What do we know so far?<\/span>

So far, the SARS-CoV-2 virus, mainly responsive to upper respiratory tract infection, has shown the ability to involve ocular conjunctiva only. If in early reports the incidence of SARS-CoV-2 associated conjunctivitis was estimated between 1-3% of the cases, in recent reports it raises up to 5% of the cases and as high as 32% in severe COVID-19 cases. Conjunctivitis signs include hyperemia, tearing, chemosis, and mucous discharge. The typical follicular conjunctivitis is responsible for dry eye symptoms, blurred vision, and foreign body sensation. Although the viral RNA has a low probability to be detected in the tears of COVID-19 patients without conjunctivitis and is not systematically detected in patients with conjunctivitis, the risk of contamination remains high, especially when touching the face or handling contact lenses.
\nBeing considered at high risk for infection, the ophthalmologists had to drastically change the way they run their practices and treat patients. All ophthalmological procedures have now restarted with the systematic use of plastic breath shields attached to slit-lamps, surgical and personal protective equipment (surgical masks, goggles, or face shields). Distancing and systematic usage of the surgical mask over the patient’s nose and mouth during procedures is also required.<\/p>\n

\nBeing considered at high risk for infection, the ophthalmologists had to drastically change the way they run their practices and treat patients. All ophthalmological procedures have now restarted with the systematic use of plastic breath shields attached to slit-lamps, surgical and personal protective equipment (surgical masks, goggles, or face shields). Distancing and systematic usage of the surgical mask over the patient’s nose and mouth during procedures is also required.<\/p>\n<\/span><\/p>\n
