Cardiovascular manifestations in systemic lupus erythematosus: a critical up-date<\/span>
Author: Viviana Onofrei<\/span><\/p>\nIntroduction: This interdisciplinary topic is up to date because of the significant morbi-mortality related to the CV involvement in SLE. Understanding the pathogenesis of CV events is very important but it is incompletely understood.
\nMaterial and method: Based on the systematic review of recent literature and our clinical experience, the topic highlights the modern aspects on the physiopathology, new molecular biomarkers, imaging methods of atherosclerosis assessment, and the potential treatments of CV disease in SLE.
\nResults: CV disease have a proportionally higher incidence in SLE compared to general populations, tend to be clinically silent for long periods, but are potentially fatal. There are several conflicting results regarding lupus-related risk factors. Other disease-related factors may be more important than conventional atherosclerotic risk factors, namely, the endothelial damage, chronic inflammation, adaptive immune responses and the protective\/harmful effect of several drugs. There are also recent findings which argue that tissue injury rather than inflammation may be the cause of CV complications in SLE. It is incompletely defined whether SLE have a general elevated risk of CV disease or CV disease is a phenotype occurring in some subgroups of patients.
\nConclusions: SLE has a multifactorial pathogenesis and an intricate relationship with CV disease. The current state of fundamental research remains incomplete. There is a great need for prospective studies to translate the information into effective approaches of treatment.<\/p>\n

Introduction: This interdisciplinary topic is up to date because of the significant morbi-mortality related to the CV involvement in SLE. Understanding the pathogenesis of CV events is very important but it is incompletely understood.
\nMaterial and method: Based on the systematic review of recent literature and our clinical experience, the topic highlights the modern aspects on the physiopathology, new molecular biomarkers, imaging methods of atherosclerosis assessment, and the potential treatments of CV disease in SLE.
\nResults: CV disease have a proportionally higher incidence in SLE compared to general populations, tend to be clinically silent for long periods, but are potentially fatal. There are several conflicting results regarding lupus-related risk factors. Other disease-related factors may be more important than conventional atherosclerotic risk factors, namely, the endothelial damage, chronic inflammation, adaptive immune responses and the protective\/harmful effect of several drugs. There are also recent findings which argue that tissue injury rather than inflammation may be the cause of CV complications in SLE. It is incompletely defined whether SLE have a general elevated risk of CV disease or CV disease is a phenotype occurring in some subgroups of patients.
\nConclusions: SLE has a multifactorial pathogenesis and an intricate relationship with CV disease. The current state of fundamental research remains incomplete. There is a great need for prospective studies to translate the information into effective approaches of treatment.<\/p>\n
